Local Action Week

Local Action Week 2012,  29th of April to the 7nd of May.

This is an UNMISSABLE opportunity which Cambridge Hub are putting on for all the Local Action Groups who do ethical, active work in our local community in Cambridge. What they do is wonderful and deserves recognition and support, and this is why we want to hold an event which highlights their successes to the student body and get more people involved in what they do! Cambridge Hub exists to connect societies with all those students out there who just need that extra little push to get involved, and we think this is the perfect opportunity!

The week will be special for a number of reasons. Running Sunday April the 29th to Monday May 7nd, this allows us to put on a number of events. It is also close to the beginning of term, and although students will have began to think about exams and revision, it's also a time to start thinking about what else you'll be putting on your CV besides exam results. Volunteering at university is a great way to show future employers that you are dynamic and interesting, and that you can balance a busy schedule; as well as giving you that all-important experience for if you want to work in the third sector.

To launch our event, we will be collaborating with Lola Lo's to put on a fantastic night on the 29th of April. This will be a great opportunity to get back into the Cambridge night life scene after the holidays and also to get information about the events of the week ahead in the form of specialised ethical goody bags! Get ready to come and dance the night away in our very own hub themed room (orange, of course!) with orange themed drinks and entertainment, with Lola Lo dj's and photographers.

Following on from the launch, throughout the week we will compile exciting activities that societies will run to give volunteers a taster of what they do. Examples of things happening are

- The Zero Carbon Societies Photography Competition, which will run throughout the week! Photograph their windmills in interesting places around Cambridge to raise awareness and practice those creative skills!

- SCA taster days with ongoing projects and a training workshop

- Training on the Value of Volunteering run by Amy Anderson

- The week will end in style with a forum on Homelessness in collaboration with the Union and the Wilberforce Society. This will be a panel style debate, and with some big names already invited and some local societies getting involved, this should be a brilliant way to end the week and ask the question, why is homelessness something we don't want to talk about? What can we really do about it in our own community?

Cambridge Hub are really excited about this and you should be too- this is a fantastic opportunity to be part of Cambridge's first Local Action Week, and make a tradition that Cambridge can be proud of, showing that students really do care about what's going on in the world around them outside of their degrees!
