OxSEF Weekend

Date:
Monday, 29 June 2009 1:00am - Saturday, 4 July 2009 1:00am

The Oxford Social Enterprise Forum (OxSEF), the UK’s first student conference on social entrepreneurship, launched on the weekend of 9-10th May. Held at the Said Business School it brought together over 160 practitioners, academics and students from across the country to participate in a variety of dynamic panel debates and workshops.

OxSEF was run by Student Hubs, a youth-led organisation working in UK universities to achieve a step-change in student engagement with social and environmental issues. It was held in association with the Commission for Youth Social Enterprise, and supported by the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship and UnLtd – the Foundation for Social Entrepreneurs.

The forum was characterised by a high level of energy and inspiration, most visible in the pitching competition for entrepreneurial ideas to create social change – ‘The Big Pitch’. After two rounds of heated competition three finalists were awarded £500 grants from UnLtd.

Mojdeh Moasser, one of the recipients commented, “I was overwhelmed by the amount of inspiration in the forum and really felt motivated to kick start something quickly. With the £500 award I will be able to do just that.”

Top place went to two Oxford undergraduates Sara Fernandez and Ben Waugh with LinkAges, a social enterprise which builds links between generations by placing students in the spare rooms of older people’s houses. In addition to their £500 grant they were also awarded £1000 of office space in the Hive Oxford to launch the enterprise.

Other highlights included an official screening of “The Age of Stupid”, inspiring stories from 3 Social Enterprise Ambassadors, and workshops on “Practical Idealists” with Professor John Hammock (Former Executive Director of Oxfam America) and “Raising Capital for your social venture” with John Mullins (Associate Professor at the London Business School).

The weekend also featured panel debates on topics including, ‘Can the market save the environment?’ and ‘A new form of capitalism. Does the economic crisis present an opportunity for a new way of doing business?’ With speakers including Sir David King (Former Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK Government) and Cliff Prior (Chief Executive of UnLtd).

The success of the forum came in the dynamic combination of learning, networking and participating in making social entrepreneurship a reality for inspired students. It is just a hint of the exciting things to come from Student Hubs as it works to develop a generation of students who are empowered to test out new thinking, new approaches and new products and services to tackle society’s toughest problems.

Nice

Fundraising is not my expertise. My experience is primarily in administering and student loansadvising endowed private foundations who already have their funds. Fortunately, other board members bring moreexperience raising capital. One of our first orders of business is to payday loans get the founder paid. For the last year, he's been effectively carrying out the workof the nonprofit for free but at this point he needs to feed his family and keep his lights turned on.He's now raised enough moneypersonal loans  for himself (he's usually raising money for others)to start a proper organization and allow him to keep doing the work of connectingphilanthropists with high-impactnonprofitsby drawing a bit of a salary to pay his bills. loans
